Chip Away Malaria is designed to inform the public of the many lives that are being affected by malaria and how simple it is to solve this problem through the use of insecticide treated bednets. Using a grassroots approach, Chip Away Malaria inspires students at universities across the world to join in the fight against the malaria epidemic. If we can all unite against this horrible problem, it can be considerably reduced in the coming years.
Chip Away Malaria started in September 2006 on the campus of Central Michigan University. Dr. Vincent Mumford inspired a group of undergraduate students in CMU’s sport managment department to began a movement to help eliminate the sickening problem of malaria in Africa. Through Dr. Mumford’s service-learning project students created the framework for Chip Away Malaria. In the first semester of existance the students raised over $5,000 dollars. A passion formed in the hearts of those involved and they continued to develop the organization to what it is today. After three years, Chip Away Malaria has saved roughly 12,000 lives through the $30,000 dollars they have raised. Students have held various fundraisers including a 3 on 3 basketball tournament, dodgeball tournament, youuth football clinic, basketball clinic, and free throw competition. Last year, Chip Away Malaria partnered with the Detroit Pistons on an endeavor and raised over $2500. The Detroit Pistons and American Red Cross recognized Chip Away Malaria for its efforts in January 2007 by deeming them Michigan Heroes. The Detroit News, Detroit Free Press, PEOPLE, Central Michigan Life, CMU Coaches Show, The Morning Sun, The Beacon-News, Pistons.com, Nothing But Nets, Central Beat, CFX Radio Station, The Huge Show, CMU News, and Pistons Weekly have also highlighted Chip Away Malaria.
